I wish I could say that I knew how to swaddled newborns since I was young; But it wasn’t until a few years ago (well actually more than a few years but who’s really counting) that I began swaddling newborns.
I was okay at it when I began teaching at the Clifton school but it was not my best quality. It took me a while to learn the best way to a swaddle newborn. We definitely didn’t have the top-of-the-line swaddling blankets laying around for us to use. So we made do with what we had which at that point were thermal receiving blankets. They did the job but not for long. I have class full of little ones that were Houdini’s in get out of their swaddle.
Now fast-forward a few years, when I became a Newborn Care Specialist. I had progressed to using 42 x 42 inch swaddling blankets. They were nice but I was still having the same problem with babies wiggling their way out of the swaddle. At this point, I had a firm handle on swaddling (I had several ways in which to swaddle a baby just in case they did make their way out of one…lol). But then someone introduced me the miracle blanket.
At first, I thought the miracle blanket to be awkward and well – just plan stupid in design. I could see what they were going for but I just didn’t see how it was any better than the traditional swaddle blankets I was using at the time.
While working a Newborn Care Specialist job one night, I decided to give the miracle blanket an honest try. I swaddled the baby – who happened to be a Houdini baby – in the miracle blanket and laid him down as usual. I fully expected to hear him up again in a few hours because he has wiggled out of his swaddle and was cold.
But much to my surprise, that didn’t happen! He was still snuggle as a bug in a rug when I woke from my nap. I could not believe it! He was still sleeping… I was floored!!
At that moment, the miracle blanket became my swaddle blanket of choice! It’s the first blanket I recommend to parents when they ask me which one I prefer!!
Before I go, I would love to hear switch swaddle blanket your prefer?Do you even have a preference? Tell me about your swaddling experiences!!
