Everyday I hear from a nanny or a newborn care specialist who is eager to land a certain job only to have the prospective family tell her that she has not been hired because of her hourly rate high. Or they want to “negotiate” her rate because they feel that caring for children is only worth a certain dollar amount.
Today, seems to be no different. I received an email about a potential newborn care specialist position. I have not worked this type of job for a few months, I have been eager to get back to working with newborns again. So, I read the email with lots of joy and excitement.
My excitement soon turned to unhappiness and to be honest, a bit of disgust. Most people are aware of my rates and if they aren’t, they ask. So, when I was asked to consider this position for a 40% decrease in pay, I began to wonder if my services were truly being valued.
I have been a NCS and a nanny for nearly 12 years now, and I am VERY good at what I do. My years of experience have taught me many valuable lesson about caring for newborns and young children. It’s truly what I was put here on this earth to do. With every training and job that I add to my belt, my knowledge and experience base grows.
Which why people look to me for help.
It is so disheartening to see great nannies and newborn care specialist get under valued because a prospective families do not want to “pay” for a services that will help both them and their children – their most precious asset in life.
